Guelph hosts one of the most magnificent
Gothic churches in Canada. The construction of Our Lady Immaculate began
in 1877 under the Irish-Canadian artist Joseph Connolly. Connolly built
many beautiful churches in Ontario in different styles, including
St. Peter's Cathedral Basilica
in London, Ontario. Matthew Bell, a local artisan, did some of the carvings
on the exterior and the interior pillars of the church. He died after a
fall from the building in 1883.
The church was consecrated in 1888
by the Bishop of Hamilton.
