Diocese of Brooklyn

The Diocese of Brooklyn was split from the Archdiocese of New York in 1853. Later the area of the Long Island is lost to the newly erected Diocese of Rockville Centre in 1957.

The first St. James Church was built in 1823 and became the oldest Catholic church on the Long Island. The present structure was completed in 1902.

Although St. James is small compared to other cathedrals, all visitors and pilgrims will appreciate its peaceful and decorated interior. Cardinal John O'Connor once called the cathedral the city's "best-kept secret". With the help of religious sisters, the parish runs a lot of outreach programs to the elderly, the poor and those in need.

Pope John Paul II raised St. James Cathedral to the status of Minor Basilica in 1982. St. James became the 30th church in the United States to obtain this honour.
